SPN 07th Nov Event: Why systems engineering is like toasting bread, but not like a toaster

Date: Monday 07th November 2011

Time: 18h45
Venue: Wild Peacock, 32 Piet Retief Street, Stellenbosch, South Africa

Dress: Business Casual

Guest Speakers:   Daniel Malherbe and Bani van der Merwe  – The nature of people, the nature of problems, and why a complex world needs Systems Engineering and knowledge management -” why systems engineering is like toasting bread, but not like a toaster”.

Letter27  is a dynamic young engineering firm in Stellenbosch. We specialise in model-based systems engineering, systems-based knowledge management, and technology research. During large and complex engineering endeavours, such as designing a public transport system, or developing a submarine, there is so much going on that no one person can have comprehensive knowledge of the entire system. For effective decision making knowledge has to be shared and flow within the organisation that creates the system. The right knowledge in the right place at the right time allows organisations to achieve objectives too big for individuals to fully understand.

All business and engineering projects involve people, and people add complexity to any problem, no matter how simple it may seem. Knowledge management helps us deal with what an organisation must know, and how to facilitate the creation and flow of that knowledge. Systems engineering and knowledge management tie it all together.
